The Brief

Severe spalling and cracking of the concrete caused by the expansion of corroding reinforcement bars within the concrete was causing serious concern for this historic monument. Numerous large cracks were identified which could cause large lumps of concrete to fall creating a major safety issue for anyone below.

The Solution

Works entailed: high pressure power washing of the concrete viewing chamber, the identification and full repair of defects including renewal of reinforcing bars, application of migrating corrosion inhibitor (MCI) and application of anti-carbonation coatings.
