Somerset Fire Stations

Project: Fire Station Drill Towers (Various)
Client: Lancer Scott
Main contractor: Devon & Somerset Fire & Rescue Service
Work involved: Concrete Repairs
Date: January 2023

The Brief

Multiple fire stations required concrete repairs to the practice drill towers. The fire stations were at; Yeovil, Frome, Cheddar, Nether Stowey and Burnham on Sea. All drill towers were of similar detail. Large areas of the tower had spalling concrete and large brackets supporting the cross beams . A mobile elevated work platforms (MEWP) was required to gain access to he towers to complete the works.

The Solution

The Yeovil Drill tower required large repairs which were accessed internally. The other drill towers were repaired via MEWP (externally). Each bracket was cleaned from rust and treated with anti corrosion paint. Many of the brackets had blown the concrete caused by the rusting expansive forces. Each area was broken out, steel cleaned and painted with an anti-corrosion paint, shuttered and then repaired using Fosroc’s Renderoc HB45.

SWCR made the joints between the frame of the building into expansion joints, by cleaning the sides of the joint, priming , inserting backing foam and applying sikaflex pro 3 to the area and tooling off. On Burnham on sea Fire station, Yeovil and Frome Drill Towers, Res-tec Flexitec 2020 waterproofing system was used on the floors to prevent any further water ingress.
