‘Moby Dick’ Concrete Barge

Project: 'Moby Dick' Concrete Barge
Client: Wave-Tricity Limited
Main contractor: Mainstay Marine Solutions Limited

The Brief

Wave-Tricity Ltd had purchased a former MOD concrete barge which they wanted to use as a test platform for the renewable wave energy project.

The main problem was that the barge had been converted used as a houseboat for several years. Existing openings had been enclosed and new opening made for skylight, chimneys vents etc.

The Solution

SWCR removed all the unnecessary items (skylights, chimneys etc) and then repaired the opening using new steel and mesh drilled and epoxy fixed into position to replace the removed reinforcement shuttering underneath before re-casting new concrete sections. Smaller defects were repairs using repair mortar and levelling mortars and the large areas to the hull were also coated with a highly chemical resistant coating.
