The Brief
Mowhay Footbridge, runs between Honicknowle and Weston Mill over the A38. It was deemed to narrow for pedestrians and cyclists to use safely at the same time. Funding was given to Plymouth City Council to widen the footbridge. South West Highways were instructed to carry out a scheme. The works would include, new wider concrete section laid over the existing to widen the bridge, ramp to connect the existing foot and cycle paths, new steps, fencing, new guardrails, new lighting and new surface water drainage system.

The Solution
Areas of the bridge required the cutting back of some steel reinforcement where the original end detail had be removed. Concrete repairs and render coatings were then applied to both ends of the footbridge.
We then infilled between the new deck units, inserting new foam backing strips, applying Planitop (Mapei R4 repair Mortar) to fill in the face of the joint.
We also repaired some edge details to the new deck units by grinding back any rough edges, and applying a thin render patch coating to the face to give a continuous edge.
